Savoring - How to Enjoy Life to the Fullest

Savoring – How to Enjoy Life to the Fullest

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about their recent experience based on returning to a happy childhood memory. They explore the depths of savoring that experience. To savor is to appreciate and delight in experiences of life so you can enjoy life to the fullest. You are mindful of the amazing gift of life and maximize your presence in every single minute.

Before you savor you must be able to…

  • Have your basic physical and psychological needs met
  • Learn to rest
  • Connect to the present moment
  • Be mindful of your blessings
  • Tune in with the awareness that this is a great moment

Telling your story

Past

It’s important to remember the past and put a positive spin on it. Since Dr. Rodney grew up where there was a lot of snow, one of his fondest memories is going cross-country skiing. He began to rehearse the joy of that experience and wanted to introduce Karen to the experience. She was raised in Costa Rica and so had never been skiing.

Present

The key to savoring is learning to be in the moment. For example, when you eat you can slow down to chew slowly and enjoy every bite of food. In our story in the mountains it was important to open our eyes to the beauty that surrounded us even though we had a mini-crisis.

Future

You can savor the anticipation of the adventures ahead. The most important part of this one is to make sure that you realize that issues can always come up and yet, you can have a great time. Our favorite saying is, “We can get through anything together.”

Types of Savoring

1. Experiences

This is the overview of the experience with the intention of focusing all your attention on appreciating positive events. As you are immersed in the experience you need to include sensations (such as the breeze on your face), emotions (what you felt), perceptions (what this means to you), thoughts (your thinking), and behaviors (what you do with this information).

2. Processes

This requires you to trust the process of connecting the events with the positive emotions coming from what just happened. For example when you help a stranger, you recall the positive emotions felt while participating in that activity.

3. Responses

Your response to the positive events of your life results in specific thoughts or behaviors will have a long-lasting effect. Your response either dampens or amplifies the intensity and duration of your positive emotions.

In our next podcast, we discuss specific ways and activities to encourage savoring.
